Mastering an at-home manicure

Mastering an at-home manicure

Who said you had to leave your home in order to get clean and polished nails? With the right tools and expertise, you can give yourself a quick and effective manicure in the comfort of your own home. Here is a step-by-step process of how to give yourself perfectly painted nails:

Cut and trim

First things first – you have to make sure all of your nails are cut down to a consistent length. Use a nail clipper to trim your nails straight across, rounding them in a gentle curve on the edges. Keep in mind that it’s going to be much easier to cut your nails if you shower or soak in the bath beforehand because the warm water softens your nails.

It can be tough to get perfectly rounded edges when working with a nail trimmer, which is why filing is the next step. Take your nail file and move it from the corner of your nail toward the center in one direction. Never go back and forth with the file, as this can weaken your nails and cause them to tear or break. Of course, if you don’t want rounded nails, you can opt for other shapes, such as almond, square or oval. Always make sure your nails are fully dried before filing. Soft nails will be difficult to file and are prone to chipping when damp.

Nobody will be paying attention to your beautiful nails if you have dry, flaky skin on your hands. Never forget to revitalize and hydrate your skin!

Next up is painting your nails! If you have existing polish on, be sure to remove that using nail color remover. After that, reach for a base coat to prevent your nails from staining and help the polish go on smooth.

Now for the fun part – choose a color that coordinates with your outfit, or a hue that matches the feel of the season. Once you’ve applied your polish, finish off your manicure with a top coat to seal in the color and extend the life of your nails.
